The Indie Rock band hails from the heart of Joplin, Missouri. In 2013, they released their first full length record “The Ides” (LoveWay Records) produced by Jeff Smith (Never Shout Never, Trust Company, Carter Hulsey).

In June of 2013, Me Like Bees won a spot to compete in the Ernie Ball Music Man Battle of the Bands (17th Consecutive Year). After surpassing many opponents and outlasting over 20,000 other bands they advanced to the final round. Me Like Bees won the final showcase at the House Of Blues in Hollywood California in January of 2014.

After completing a leg on the Van’s Warped Tour, Me Like Bees finished their EP “There Will Be Time” with award-winning producer John Feldmann (Five Seconds of Summer, The Used, Panic! at the Disco, Goldfinger, Good Charlotte, Plain White T’s) in 2015. There Will Be Time was positively received by many outlets, and Alternative Press gave it 4 stars. Upon the release of There Will Be Time, they embarked on a nation wide tour with Never Shout Never (Warner Bros); spanning from the world famous Troubadour in Hollywood, California to Brighton Music Hall in Boston, Massachusetts.

They were asked to collaborate with Image Comics (The Walking Dead) and Jeremy Haun, writing an EP based on the comic book titled The REALM. They wrote a track for each issue in the first story arc and released the thematic EP, Songs From The REALM in March of 2018.

Naoko Yamano of Shonen Knife On New Album and Tour

public.jpeg

With nearly 40 years as a band under their belt, the formidable force of SHONEN KNIFE shows no signs of slowing down. Their sugary punk appeal transcends just their music alone, as their videos, colorfully Mondrian-esque fashion aesthetic, and frenetic live shows can attest.

With the release of their latest video, the title track of their 19th solo album SWEET CANDY POWER (Good Charamel Records; release date June 5, 2019), the Japanese punk trio combines all of this for a funtastic and infectious shout-along. Premiering on industry tome BrooklynVegan who lauds the new album as "another very fun batch of the kind of Ramones-y bubblegum punk that Shonen Knife have been churning out for nearly four decades", the "Sweet Candy Power" video is like a bag of Pop Rocks... It starts out sweet and tangy but quickly explodes into an all-out punk fest, celebrating the energy boost of all types of confections.

In addition to the new video, sisters Naoko and Atsuko with drummer Risa are announcing a North American tour kicking off at Los Angeles' Bootleg Theater on August 23rd and wrapping around the continent till early October when they conclude the tour at Pittsburgh's Cattivo, and includes a date opening for Black Flag in Dallas, TX on September 14th.

Featuring sisters Naoko and Atsuko with drummer Risa as well as special appearances from Shonen Knife alumni Ritsuko and Naru, Shonen Knife have inspired dozens of artists and fans over the course of the last 38 years. Weathering the music industry's ups and downs with their sparkling and seemingly innocent attitude intact, Sweet Candy Power continues to indulge in the band's obsession with food. From the sugar-rush-inducing title track, to new classics such as "Ice Cream Cookie Sandwiches," "Peppermint Attack," and "California Lemon Trees," they make music that makes people happy and joyful and have consistently done exactly that for decades.

Since their pure DIY beginnings in 1981, Osaka, Japan's Shonen Knife have been building a faithful following of music enthusiasts and the alternative rock elite. Their relentless journey secured the band's place as one of the pioneer ambassadors of Japanese rock music and culture on the international stage.

They’ve enjoyed sharing their ever-evolving career for decades, sharing the stage with rock royalty such as Nirvana, Sonic Youth, and The Ramones. After 38 years, the band still receives rave reviews from outlets like Noisey who said, "Japan’s Shonen Knife certainly aren’t acting their age... Full of shimmering girl group melodies and immediately hummable guitar lines, 'Jump Into The New World' will make you leave you bummers behind"

With incendiary and icon-building appearances on Lollapalooza, MTV’s 120 Minutes, Beavis & Butthead, as well as the track "Buttercup (I'm A Super Girl)" written for Cartoon Network's The Powerpuff Girls, Shonen Knife have secured their rock solid cult status as they march into the future.

Shonen Knife perform this Sunday, August 25 at Vinyl Las Vegas with Me Like Bees.

Check out our interview with Naoko Yamano of Shonen Knife below:

VIMMAG: You're currently on tour in support of your new album, Sweet Candy Power. What songs can fans expect to be played during the tour?
NAOKO: We will play songs from Sweet Candy Power and our best hit songs. I usually spend a lot of time to make our set list. I have to pick songs for a good set list from tons of songs. I hope our fans like it.

VIMMAG:   Tell us how Sweet Candy Power came to be. What was the inspiration for the new songs?
NAOKO: : I like 70’s and 60’s American and British Rock. I can say it’s classic rock. It’s classic but still fresh for me. The new album Sweet Candy Power is a homage to my favorite rock. It includes various fun songs. I promise that people never get tired of it.

VIMMAG:   Your band has shared the stage with bands such as Nirvana, Sonic Youth, and The Ramones. What current bands are you all listening to?

NAOKO: I listen to R&B, funk, disco music like Earth Wind & Fire, Con Funk Shun, Isley Brothers, Michael Jackson like that and recently I love Asia a lot. I listen to Pilot, too. High on Fire’s new album is good, too.

VIMMAG:    We asked our readers what they would like to ask and one of your fans wants to know how it was like covering ‘Top of the world’ from the Carpenters tribute album. How did that come about?
NAOKO:: The record company of that tribute album made a contact to our management at that time in 1990’s. They wanted us to join that project. I picked up the song “Top of the World” because it’s an excellent song. Melody lines are very pop and fun.

VIMMAG:  What's next for the band?
NAOKO: After North American tour, we will go to Australia and New Zealand tour from October to November. We have no plan next year so far but I would like to keep on rockin’!

Shonen Knife Perform At Vinyl Las Vegas, August 25

p05703sj.jpg

Shonen Knife perform at Vinyl Las Vegas in support of their recently released album, ‘Sweet Candy Power.’ Currently on their 2019 Sweet Candy Power North American Tour, the band are scheduled to perform in over 20 American cities throughout the year. Check out their music video for their song, ‘Sweet Candy Power,’ below.

Shonen Knife is an alternative rock band formed in Osaka in 1981. Heavily influenced by 1960s girl groupspop bands, The Beach Boys, and early punk rock bands, such as the Ramones, the trio crafts stripped-down songs with simplistic lyrics sung both in Japanese and English.

Despite their pop-oriented nature, the trio maintains a distinctly underground garage rock sound rooted in edgy instrumentation and D.I.Y.aesthetics, which over the course of their long career has earned them a solid, worldwide cult following and made avid fans out of seminal 1990s alternative rock bands such as Sonic YouthNirvana, and Redd Kross. The band has been credited with making "the international pop underground more international" by "opening it up to bands from Japan".They have also performed as a Ramones tribute band under the name The Osaka Ramones.

Record Store Day 2019 Returns On Saturday, April 13th

crosley-radio-rsd3-turntable-4.jpg

This year Record Store Day is introducing their own turntable, the RSD3. A Foo Fighters 3” record, (“Big Me”), and two blind box series from Epitaph Records and Third Man Records will hit the shelves on April 13 alongside the turntable .

This year releases include In The Garage: Live Music From WTF With Marc Maron, a collection of lovely intimate performances from the podcast, which brought together a team that included Marc, folks from Newbury Comics, Fingerprints, Tito’s HandMade Vodka and Record Store Day—for the first release on their own Record Store Day record label. The compilation with music from Ben Harper and Charlie MusselwhiteKaren KilgariffJason Isbell,  Dave Alvin, Eels, J Masic, Aimee Mann, Melissa Etheridge, Margo Price and Nick Lowe benefits the amazing organization Musicians on Call, who know something about the beauty of the intimate performance—they bring musicians to hospital facilities to bring a little joy to patients across the country.

The 2019 Record Store Day Ambassadors are Pearl Jam and their RSD 2019 contribution is the vinyl release of their legendary Live At Easy Street CD. The set was recorded live at a record store in Seattle with the audience made up of staff from record stores across the country. PRINCE has two titles on this year’s list: a vinyl release of His Majesty’s Pop Life/The Purple Mix Club and the truly sought after The VERSACE Experience: PRELUDE 2 GOLD, a cassette release never commercially released—but given out at Versace’s 1995 Paris Fashion Week show.  Jeff Tweedy has an entirely new album, Warmer. Recorded during the sessions for his latest album, Warm, this companion album for Record Store Day is ten brand new songs.

Collaborations run strong too, as Anderson Paak teams up with Busta Rhymes for a single, Mark Ronson and Miley Cyrus get physical with their hit “Nothing Breaks Like A Heart”, we revisit a classic cassette from Craig Mack and the Notorious B.I.G. and if posthumous collaborations count, the group that came together when Queen’s Brian May and Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins fleshed out a track left by Beach Boy Dennis Wilson is pretty cool. (Brian May is everywhere this RSD: his other band has a reissue single of that song that will never be a hit--- “Bohemian Rhapsody”, with its original B-Side “I’m In Love With My Car”; a picture disc of the Bohemian Rhapsody soundtrack: and he has a single all of his own.) And while there are usually some David Bowie treasures to be found on Record Store Day, the single celebrating the celluloid collaboration of Bowie with Marlene Dietrich in Just A Gigolo stands out.

Musicians love music just as much as we do, and some of them use RSD as a chance to take on their own favorite songs. Erykah Badu and James Poyser take Squeeze’s “Tempted” down another road, Swervedriver bring the shoegaze out in classic tracks from the Byrds and The Supremes, Motorhead’s love of the Ramones is evident on their RSD 2019 7” release, High On Fire give Celtic Frost and Bad Brains some attention on the flip side of their brand new single, and Weezer tops them all with their full covers record The Teal Album (guess what color that vinyl is?).

Elvis Costello and The Imposters release the tidy Purse EP that brings together the songs Elvis has written with some of the best songwriters in history, including Paul McCartney and Johnny Cash.  Some other names on a lot of ‘Best of All Time’ lists are also on our RSD 2019 list, including Steve Earle, Pink Floyd, Elton John, Joe Strummer, U2, Gorillaz, Rolling Stones, Devo, Aretha Franklin, Charlie Parker and more. Two of the most well known albums ever released get a fresh look on April 13: Bob Dylan’s Blood On The Tracks—The Original New York Test Pressingand John Lennon’s Imagine (Raw Studio Mixes) give fans a new look at beloved music, while newer artists like Greta Van FleetCourtney Barnett, John The Martyr and Soccer Mommy are here for that musical discovery side of record stores.

And of course, this year marks the 50th anniversary of that magical time out on Yasgur’s Farm, and the Record Store Day 2019 list highlights that with releases of the sets from Janis JoplinSly & The Family StoneCanned Heat and a 3 LP Mono release of the original Woodstock soundtrack—exactly as you would have heard it from the loudspeakers in August 1969.  (Oh, and for good measure, a release that visits Green Day’s set from that second Woodstock.)

More information on these releases and SO MANY MORE can be found at recordstoreday.com

Thom Yorke Suspiria (Music For The Luca Guadagnino Film) To Be Released October 26

Following the fleeting reveal of instrumental passages in two trailers and today’s release of the track “Suspirium” it can be confirmed: Thom Yorke’s Suspiria (Music for the Luca Guadagnino Film) will be released October 26 on XL Recordings.

Suspiria consists of 25 original compositions written by Thom specifically for Luca Guadagnino reimagining of the 1977 Dario Argento horror classic. The album is a mix of instrumental score work, interstitial pieces and interludes, and more traditional song structures featuring Thom’s vocals such as “Unmade”, “Has Ended” and “Suspirium,” the album’s first single featuring the melodic theme that recurs throughout the film and its score.

As scoring a horror film presented Thom with altogether new challenges and opportunities, Suspiria stands apart from any of his other work. Piano/vocal ballads, Krautrock-esque modular synth work inspired by the film’s Berlin 1977 setting, multilayered vocals, and melodies that convey terror, longing and melancholy combine to create a chaotic yet cohesive musical spell.

Suspiria was written and arranged by Thom Yorke, recorded and produced by Thom and Sam Petts-Davies. The album also features the London Contemporary Orchestra and Choir, Noah Yorke on drums on “Has Ended” and “Volk,” and Pasha Mansurov on solo flute on “Suspirium.”

Suspiria (Music for the Luca Guadagnino Film) will be available across digital platforms, as well as 2-LP gatefold package pink vinyl and 2-CD physical versions. See below for track listings and for further information go to http://x-l-r.co/suspiria

Thom Yorke is scheduled to perform on December 22 at The Chelsea at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas Hotel. Radiohead frontman, Thom Yorke alongside Nigel Godrich and visual artist Tarik Barri, will perform songs spanning his solo works The Eraser and Tomorrow’s Modern Boxes, as well as Atoms For Peace’s Amok. Support comes from special guest Oliver Coates.

Orgy Bring Your Army Tour at Beauty Bar Sept. 28

OrgyBand2014.jpg

Orgy band set is set to feature on Friday September 28th at The Beauty Bar Las Vegas.
With special guests Motograter, Brand Of Julez, and The Crowned.

ORGY emerged in the Goth music scene in 1998 with their incredible remake of ‘Blue Monday’. The track sold over 1 million copies and built a worldwide audience for the brand. In late 2005, after the release of the D1 Music and Associates Punk Statik Paranoia PSP and their D1 Music /DLC Records Independent “TRANS GLOBAL SPECTACLE” DVD promotional tour the band went on a hiatus to work on their side projects. In 2011, after seven years of demand from fans for new music and a tour, founding member Jay Gordon (vocals) decided it was time to kick things back up and begin recording and touring again in support of ORGY’s fans.

The band’s new website, www.orgymusic.com was launched in early-2012 in conjunction with their first tour in 7 years.

Life Is Shit Festival Returns For Its Sixth Year

maxresdefault.jpg

Las Vegas’s music and arts festival, Life is Shit Festival, will return for the sixth year Sat., Sept. 22 at The Dive, 4110 S. Maryland Pkwy.

The festival will include performances by out-of-town acts such as Southern California glam garage punks The Flytraps, legendary Tucson, Ariz. prog-punk maniacs Mr. Free and the Satellite Freakout, and Phoenix, Ariz. electro-hip hop duo Snailmate, playing alongside local Las Vegas fixtures including Ted Rader & the Magic Family, The Acid Sisters, Same Sex Mary, DANGERBONER, and more. Reno, Nev.-based Loud As Folk Records will curate acoustic performances on a second, outdoor stage.

Despite its name, Life is Shit Festival tries to make life less shitty for some, serving as a fundraiser each year for local charity Girls Rock Vegas, a summer camp and after-school program which teaches underprivileged, adolescent girls in Las Vegas how to develop a positive self-image by playing rock music. Fundraising is achieved through an instrument drive and a raffle, with prizes donated by bands and many Las Vegas businesses, including recording studios, record stores, and tattoo shops.

Life is Shit also features food trucks, artist booths and contests for prizes. Additionally, 2018 will mark the festival’s third year publishing the Life is Shit Zine, a 64-page zine available at the festival and online, featuring band interviews, writing, art and more.

Founded in 2013 by members of the Las Vegas music community, Life is Shit was created as a grittier, heavier, and more affordable alternative to the massive, pop culture-oriented Life is Beautiful Festival, which occurs in downtown Las Vegas the same fall weekend.

Each year, the homegrown festival features acts from the thriving Las Vegas music scene, playing alongside select national acts. Past national acts have included Detroit’s Timmy’s Organism (which signed to Jack White’s Third Man Records shortly after its 2014 Life is Shit Festival appearance), and Chicago’s White Mystery (which filmed part of its feature-length dark comedy “That Was Awesome” at Life is Shit Festival). New York’s politically-charged anti-folk artist Hamell on Trial headlined Life is Shit Festival in 2017, shortly after his album Tackle Box was given an “A” rating by legendary rock journalist Robert Christgau

Despite competing with a multi-day, corporate music festival, Life is Shit Festival has grown each year, receiving overwhelming community support, as well as media coverage from nearly all major Las Vegas media outlets, local blogs, and even The Washington Post.

Canadian Band Mulligrub Venture Into Velveteen Rabbit Tonight

Photo: Jen Doersken

Photo: Jen Doersken

Mulligrub from Winnipeg, Manitoba venture into Vegas tonight performing with Las Vegas bands The Quacks and Bad Girls’ Smoking Lounge at Velveteen Rabbit.

The band describe themselves as “two Cancers and an Aquarius writing upbeat emo garage pop to have Way Too Many Feelings to.”

VIM: What are you looking forward to most about your tour stop in Vegas?

Mirella: the first time I visited Vegas I went as a tourist. I didn’t like it cause all the casinos smelled like smoke, and there was a lot drunk people. Things that are not my vibe. So what I am most looking forward to in Las Vegas is playing and seeing the bands and music scene!

Riley: I feel like Vegas has a really intense reputation, more so than a lot of other cities, so that’s pretty interesting. I feel like there’s got to be a lot more going on, so I’m interested to see it in real life, and meet people who live there.

Kelly: I heard it has a sphinx. I am excited to see one of the final tragic spectacles of capitalism before it descends into the sea.

VIM: How long is your tour in the US? Any favorite places so far?

M - Our tour has been is a little over two weeks. My favorite place..... I would say it would be Seattle. We found a great rainbow in Seattle

K - we have played lots of places but we also visited the sea lion caves on the Oregon Coast. We took in elevator down into a cave and there was sea lions in the cave and they were making a really funny sound. I got a penny from one of those machines where you put a penny in and then you get a little crushed penny with the seal on it or whatever attraction you happen to be at. So that was a highlight for me... all the shows were too good for me to pick one it wouldn’t be fair.

M - yes I agree with Kelly as well it’s too hard to choose one or two.

R- There’s two weeks in the US! And it was really cool to see California because I had heard so much about it and had never been. The redwoods are my favourite they are so beautiful.

my favourite show of the tour has been in Canada, but every show in the states has been really good so it’s hard to pick one.

VIM: Your album Soft Grudge, released in 1996 was six years in the making. What was the most challenging part of recording that album?

K - The most challenging part of recording an album was definitely time travelling back 20 years to 1996 and embarking on a two-year album cycle and then figuring out how to jump back forwards into 2016 at which point we were supposed to already be super famous and rich.  Obviously we aren’t rich so the plan didn’t work. I think this could be because I didn’t practice very much and had a hard time getting those guitar parts down. I was spending too much time working on the time machine and not enough time focusing on my craft.

M -  from what I remember it was like a nine hour recording session,we ended at like two or three in the morning and I had to work at seven so I was very grumpy at work the next day. Sorry that I yelled at you Kim at work..... you’re the nicest person and I was so mad that day. I’m really glad with the outcome of the Album though!

R - For me it was fine but I also recorded and mixed and mastered the album which was too much for one person to do especially when you’re in the band so I don’t wanna do that all again, but it was fun!

VIM: You’re all from Winnipeg in Minetoba. What would you recommend someone visiting there?

K - If I knew someone that was visiting Manitoba I probably would invite them over to hang out with me because not that many people really visit. I would also tell them to do purple city if it was the winter time, that is where you go stand and stare at the spotlights in front of the legislative building for about 30 seconds and then you turn around and you look at the city and everything looks purple.

M - I would recommend going to a show that’s put on by real love which is a really cool promoting company that books shows. I would also recommend going to VJ’s, really good burgers and milkshakes.

K– the milkshakes at VJ’s are actually so good they have a lime milkshake oh my God!

R - there is an old monastery in the south end of the city that used to be run by monks that burned down in like the 70s. you can go out and stand in the ruins it’s really cool. That area is really beautiful, there is a river and a really long path along it.

VIM: What’s next for the band?

M: I’m just starting to write new music so we’re having more new songs that are written by me and played by all of us and the new album is going to be released next year.

R - we are hoping to be able to really get into working on a new album this summer.

K – I am going to start getting more guitar lessons again so I can play more cooler noodley bits and I’m learning how to use a harmonizer pedal. I was always really into writing lyrics and stuff so now that I’m not doing all of it it’s fun to focus on playing the guitar better.

Also we are going to Canadian music week in Toronto soon, playing two showcases on May 10, one at 8pm and one at 10pm. We’re going to fly in a plane to get there which is pretty fucking cool.  We’re going to schmooze some people up  so all those industry big wigs out there better put their schmoozing pants on and get ready.

Anthony Krantz of The American Weather

Photo: Tylor Thurier

Photo: Tylor Thurier

We interviewed Anthony Krantz of The American Weather on the eve of his birthday on the band, his first musical experience, and what we can expect next from them. The American Weather is the songwriting of Anthony Krantz, showcased by a powerhouse of a rhythm section featuring bassist Jaz Kelso and Aaron Golubic on drums. The band had a successful release last year with their debut album, “When It Gets Worse.”

VIM MAGAZINE: Being it’s your birthday, looking back, would you have done anything in life different?

ANTHONY KRANTZ: Man that’s a pretty hefty question right off the bat. In all honesty I’m sure there are things. Seemingly dumb little decisions that I tend not to trouble myself with too much. Nothing major though.

VIM MAGAZINE: Congrats on turning 23, what was your first musical experience growing up?

ANTHONY KRANTZ: Thank you very much! Um my first ever musical experience was my 10th birthday oddly enough. I was gifted a little Squire Strat by my mom. I was really stoked on it. I had taken a few lessons and tried my hand at my elementary school talent show. If I remember correctly I had played the melody line to Across The Universe to a backtrack of the song. It was kinda weird. I lost. Looking back there was some real talented fucking kids at that school. Hahahaha.

VIM MAGAZINE: Your band, The American Weather had a successful debut album release last year, what albums are you currently listening to?

ANTHONY KRANTZ: Currently I’ve been listening to more modern stuff than I had in the past. Albums that are a year or two old by now however. I’ve really been enjoying Woodstock by Portugal. The Man. Boy Who Died Wolf by Highly Suspect. A Black Mile To The Surface by Manchester Orchestra. A Deeper Understanding by The War On Drugs. And I keep telling myself not to but I’ve basically listened to You’re Not As _ As You Think by Sorority Noise so many times I’m pretty sure I could recreate the whole thing by memory using only a pair of chopsticks and a ukulele.

VIM MAGAZINE:  Who were your artistic influences growing up?

ANTHONY KRANTZ: Oh man. Too many to even consider. There’s the classic shit like Bob Dylan and Zeppelin and The Doors. I had a big White Stripes phase, although now I have more of an appreciation for The Raconteurs. Lyrically it still is and has been Andy Hull, Conor Oberst, Sage Francis, and Brian Fallon.

VIM MAGAZINE: What can we expect next from you and the American Weather?

ANTHONY KRANTZ: We got plans. Big plans. Really big plans. Plans so huge Webster will have to consider redefining the word “plan”. I’m talking HUGE moves my guy.

Nawh we’re actually just going to put out a new record in the summer. Tour a few times around the coast and try not to starve.

Boz Boorer of The Polecats, Morrissey, Adam Ant, In Vegas Friday

IMG_0592.JPG

English guitarist and producer Boz Boorer, best known for his work founding the new wave rockabilly group, The Polecats, and later for his work as a co-writer, guitarist and musical director with Morrissey, will be featuring this Friday at the Sahara Events Center doing a DJ set.

VIM MAGAZINE: In 1983, The Polecats entered the charts in the United States with their song "Make A Circuit With Me."  Being the co-leader of the band, what were some of your fondest memories with them?

BOZ BOORER: We still play together to this day, for us at the time i think it was all a big learning thing, it was very exciting being so young and being allowed to stretch your boundaries in such an experimentally music way. Playing all over the world was a great thing too, travelling has always been a fave of mine.

VIM MAGAZINE: You along with Alain Whyte are credited with successfully synthesizing jangle pop and American rockabilly to create a new sound for Morrissey. You co-wrote a lot of the songs on one of my favorite albums "Vauxhall and I." How has it been working with Morrissey on his past and most recent albums? How is the music creation process like?

BOZ BOORER: It's never the same, I never know how I will contribute to a song, sometimes the parts are suggested on the demos, sometimes they are completely different, always a joy to behold.

IMG_0591.JPG

VIM MAGAZINE: You released your latest album last year, Age of Boom and according to Popmatters, you recorded the album at your recording studio in the mountains of Portugal. Which sounds like you might have a breathtaking view from there. How was that experience like?

BOZ BOORER: It's a lovely tranquil place up the mountains, all there is to do up there is record, it's lovely!

VIM MAGAZINE: Your wife Lyn Boorer will have a Pop Up Display for Vinyl Boutique Records. What can we expect to see there from the record store?

BOZ BOORER: We try and bring a representative selection from our London shop, T-shirts, Cds, tote bags,

IMG_0590.JPG

VIM MAGAZINE: What can we look forward to from your DJ Set on April 20th?

BOZ BOORER: Depending on the crowd, anything from 70s punk, glam rock, 80's indie 60's beat, ska and all things good!

Priests

IMG_0398.JPG

Priests are a Washington D.C. post-punk band who formed in 2012. The members are: Katie Alice Greer (vocals), Daniele Daniele (drums), Taylor Mulitz (bass), GL Jaguar (guitar). After two self-released tapes and a 7" single the band started working with Don Giovanni Records. Priests released their debut album Nothing Feels Natural in January 2017, via Sister Polygon Records. They perform at the Beauty Bar Las Vegas on Monday, April 16 at 8pm with Same Sex Mary. I had the opportunity to interview Katie Alice Greer of Priests about their debut album and life on tour.

VIM MAGAZINE:  Priests released their debut album Nothing Feels Natural in January 2017, via Sister Polygon Records. How long did it take for the band to come up with the songs for the album?

PRIESTS: It took us a long time to write Nothing Feels Natural, and even longer to record! We’re a little slow moving sometimes because we’d rather the song sound the way we want it to than release something that sounds unfinished to us. Plus we didn’t have that much experience, it was our first record. So technically the whole thing took five years .... we are SINCERELY hoping LP2 will be a little quicker

VIM MAGAZINE: What bands influenced your sound? And what bands did you all listen to growing up?

PRIESTS: Oh man we listen to all kinds of stuff. Let’s see if I can list off some music we’ve been referencing even just in the past few days: The Go-Betweens, Cupcakke, X, Portishead, Tyler The Creator, Chic, Cymande, Marine Girls, Janet Jackson, Massive Attack.... we’re big music fans (I mean this is true of any musician, right? I hope?) and to us, respecting that love/appreciation means trying to continually explore new stuff, pull references and inspiration from unexpected places.

From the album "Nothing Feels Natural" , out January 27 2017 on Sister Polygon Records. sisterpolygonrecords.bigcartel.com Directed + edited by Katie Alice Greer Camera by Drew Hagelin

VIM MAGAZINE: How has it been touring to support the album? Any favorite stops?

PRIESTS: We love touring!! It is amazing to meet people in parts of the world we’ve never seen before and incredibly humbling when sometimes these people are fans of our music as well.... not sure we have favorites, more like the act of continual travel/discovery is just continually rewarding.

VIM MAGAZINE:  You all made Stereogum’s 2013’s list of 40 Best New Bands primarily on the strength of your live shows. What can we expect fron your upcoming show at the Beauty Bar?

PRIESTS: Expect to dance and have fun

VIM MAGAZINE: What’s up next for the band?

PRIESTS: We’re working on new music! We can’t wait to share it with you.

The Dirty Hooks

VIM Magazine's Tiffany Salerno recently got to interview guitarist/songwriter Anthony Ratto III and drums/vocals Jenine Cali of The Dirty Hooks while on their tour with Stone Temple Pilots. The Dirty Hooks recently announced that they will be rejoining STP once again jumping on a few dates in May 2018.

Jenine Cali, Anthony Ratto III, and Bobby McCall of The Dirty Hooks by Tiffany Salerno

VIM MAGAZINE: Collectively you have all played numerous shows locally, nationally and internationally, opening for such acts as Joan Jett, The Killers, Taproot, Soul Asylum, Angels and Airwaves and playing on stages at South By Southwest and Warped Tour. And now you are set to open for STP. How does it feel to be opening for such an iconic band?

JENINE: I can’t even describe how amazing it is to play with your musical idols.  It’s completely surreal, you feel the need to pinch yourself constantly.  It’s one of the best feelings in the world.

ANTHONY: STP is the real deal, it’s like opening up for Led Zeppelin or the Beatles to us. They are such iconic songwriters and there music started it for us in our teens.

Jenine Cali by Tiffany Salerno

VIM MAGAZINE: Can you tell us a bit about the chemistry between all of you in the studio? What keeps you all going?

JENINE: We gel really well in the studio.  Constantly pushing each other musically and that creates a pretty positive space.  We stay honest with each other and if someone doesn’t like something we try something else until we all agree upon it.

ANTHONY: The chemistry is great! We have so many ideas to bring to the table. The hard part is not having enough time too do it all.

Bobby McCall by Tiffany Salerno

Bobby McCall by Tiffany Salerno

VIM MAGAZINE: How did the band get started? What were your musical influences growing up?

ANTHONY: The band got started with me and Bobby writing songs together for years and looking for a female drummer that could sing and Jenine fell into our laps one day when I saw her band the day after at a pizza place lol and we had drinks after the show. That’s when I found out she could play drums. So Bobby called her up a week later and set up a jam sesh and it was magic the first time we played.

Influence would be bands from the 60’s and 90’s like The Beatles and Led Zeppelin Jimi Hendrix too Nirvana, STP, The Pixies and Ween, punk rock bands like The misfits and The clash were huge. Of course newer bands like The White strips and black keys we love.

JENINE : We got started about 6/7 years ago.  The guys called me up and asked if I could play drums and sing and I said “sure!”  I had never done it before but gave it a shot and it worked!  We were all in other bands growing up in Vegas so we have crossed paths before.

I’m an 90’s alt/rock kid.  Loved Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth and of course Stone Temple Pilots...just to name a few.

VIM MAGAZINE: What is your favorite part about the local Vegas scene?

JENINE: My favorite part is how it’s really come together over the last few years.  So many different genres and talented people.  We really have a lot to show.

ANTHONY: I love that our music scene is small  in a big city. We all root for each other

dh_008.jpg

VIM MAGAZINE: What's next for the band?

JENINE: After the tour, we will be playing the Emerge Impact + Music in April and will be releasing a record very soon.  Pretty excited about getting some new tunes out.

ANTHONY: New album! New videos and more Rock n Roll shows.
